Rumfords in Sweets

3/10/98

For the first time ever a masonry fireplace is in The Sweets Catalog, a major specifying source for architects. That it's the traditional all American Rumford fireplace Thomas Jefferson insisted on at Monticello seems appropriate.

The masonry industry has never taken an overall approach to a product like a fireplace. Unlike Majestic or Heatalator, companies which see a zero-clearance fireplace from inception to marketing within one corporate umbrella, a masonry fireplace involves half a dozen manufactures, a distributor or dealer and a mason contractor - all of whom are typically small family-owned businesses and none of which has the wherewithal to advertise the end product in Sweets. Well, we did it. We're still a bunch of small companies but with the common database the Internet provides and a little help from our friends, we can see the big picture. Now it will be easier for architects to specify masonry fireplaces.
